Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810-1891) is remembered as the consummate American showman for his management of Tom Thumb and Jenny Lind, as well as his American Museum. He also co-founded the Barnum & Bailey Circus. Barnum was also a newspaper owner, philanthropist, and politician whose oversized personality overshadowed entertainment for much of the nineteenth century.
